St Nicholas School in the Northend

TERR ST CLEMENT. SCHOOL VISIT.

The museum has recently been visited by a group of GCSE students from Terrington St Clement High School. As part of their history curriculum they wanted to study a local project and True's Yard and the old Northend fitted conveniently into that category.

They enjoyed a talk and slide show using a selection of photographs from the archives, a tour of the two remaining fishermens cottages, saw how the archive material can be used as a reseach tool, and were given a guided tour of the Northend area. They were accompanied by their teachers and were enthusiastic about the benefits the visit had brought.

St. Nicholas' School 1870-1939

The school served the population of Lynn's famous fishing quarter of the North End. Although the registers have not survived we are fortunate that the School Logs have. These illustrate life in a poor area and the head teachers comments make interesting reading, including such as Mr. Grimes a young student teacher who finally left suffering from 'rheumatism of his head.' (Not surprising considering the pupils he had to teach and their lack of discipline), or one head teacher who, on the day she took up her post, noted in the school log’ My reputation, which I hold dear, will I fear be lost if I remain here.' - however she survived many years and left with a sorrowful farewell to her 'dear children.'
